A used iPhone can look spotless and still have a tired battery, a camera that won't focus, or an Apple Account lock that stops you setting it up. A quick test while the seller is there can save you a frustrating purchase.

If you're wondering **how to test a used iPhone before buying**, bring a little time, ask to handle the phone, and check it in this order. You don't need special apps. The built-in Settings, Camera and Voice Memos apps cover most of what matters.

## Before you start

Ask the seller to keep the phone unlocked and let you test it before payment. If you can, bring a cable that fits the iPhone and a SIM from the network you plan to use. Don't add your Apple Account or personal data to a phone you haven't decided to buy.

## 1. Check the screen and body

Ask the seller to remove the case. Look closely at the display, frame, back glass, camera lenses and charging port. A case can hide dents or cracks, and a chipped camera lens can affect photos.

Turn the brightness up and down. Open Notes, draw across the whole screen, then type on the keyboard. Watch for areas that don't respond, flickering, unusual lines or a patch of discoloration. A quick scroll through menus also helps you spot touch problems.

## 2. Check battery health and repair history

Open **Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging**. Look at Maximum Capacity and read any service or battery messages. There isn't one percentage that makes every used iPhone a good or bad buy. Think about how long you need the phone to last each day and whether a battery replacement would fit your budget.

Next, open **Settings > General > About** and look for **Parts and Service History**. It appears only on supported models and when the phone has relevant repair information. A part may be marked Genuine, Used or Unknown, depending on the model and repair. Apple says an Unknown label can have several causes, so ask what was replaced and whether the seller has a repair receipt. The label alone doesn't tell you the whole story.

If the phone says its battery can't be verified, don't assume the displayed battery health is accurate. Check the part history and ask about the repair. Apple's [guide to iPhone battery messages](https://support.apple.com/en-gb/103269) explains what those notices mean.

## 3. Try Face ID or Touch ID

Ask the seller to demonstrate the biometric unlock. Lock the phone and have them unlock it with Face ID, or Touch ID on a model with a Home button. Try it more than once. If it fails, or the seller says it stopped working after a repair, treat that as a real fault until it's properly checked.

## 4. Test every camera and microphone

Open Camera and take a few photos with the rear camera and selfie camera. If the iPhone has multiple rear lenses, switch between them. Tap to focus on something nearby and something farther away, then record a short video and play it back. Look for a hazy image, persistent blur, shaking or spots that appear in every photo.

Open Voice Memos, record a few words, and play them back. Then play a ringtone or video at a comfortable volume. This gives you a quick check of the microphone and speakers.

## 5. Try the buttons, charging and connection

Press the volume and side buttons. Check the Ring/Silent switch or Action button if the model has one. Connect your cable and make sure the charging icon appears and stays on.

If possible, connect to Wi-Fi and make a short call using your SIM. You can also check **Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock**. **No SIM restrictions** means the iPhone is unlocked; if a carrier is listed, confirm that your SIM works with it. Apple's [preowned iPhone checklist](https://support.apple.com/en-kw/104999) shows where to find these settings and how to test the main hardware.

## 6. Make sure Activation Lock is off

Do this before handing over money. After you've tested the phone, ask the seller to sign out and erase it in front of you. Start setup while connected to Wi-Fi. If you see **iPhone Locked to Owner**, or setup asks for the previous owner's Apple Account, stop. The seller needs to remove the lock and erase the phone before you buy it. Apple's advice is clear: don't buy an iPhone that is still Activation Locked.

## If you're buying in Pakistan, check PTA status too

Hardware can pass every test and still have a network-registration issue. Check the phone's IMEI through [PTA's official DIRBS service](https://dirbs.pta.gov.pk/) or send the IMEI by SMS to 8484. Verify the number shown on the iPhone itself, not just a screenshot from the seller. PTA recommends using its official channels for this check.

## Quick checklist before you pay

- The screen responds across its full surface, and the body and camera lenses have no damage you weren't told about.
- Battery Health and Parts and Service History make sense for the phone's age and asking price.
- Face ID or Touch ID, cameras, microphones, speakers, buttons and charging all work.
- Your SIM connects, and you understand any carrier restriction.
- The phone activates without asking for the previous owner's Apple Account.
- If you're in Pakistan, the IMEI checks out through PTA's official DIRBS service.

If a seller won't let you test the basics or remove their account, take that as your answer and walk away. Knowing **how to test a used iPhone before buying** means checking the phone in your hand, then confirming you can actually activate and use it before you pay.
